Battling The Document Dilemma : The Unseen Struggles Of Care Leavers

Meet Anuj, a young lad with dreams as big as the sky. But his childhood was a little different from most kids. He grew up in a child care home, where life was about rules and routines. At the age of 10, Anuj received his very first identification document, the Aadhaar card. To him, it was nothing more than a piece of paper with an address and contact number – that of the home’s founders. Little did he know that this single piece of paper would hold the key to unlocking a world of opportunities and challenges.

After moving out at 18, he decided to leave his past behind and moved to the bustling city of Hyderabad. He secured a job at a C. A firm and life seemed to be on an upswing.

However, there was a significant hitch in his plans. The only document he possessed was his Aadhaar card, and this soon proved to be insufficient for the adult world he was entering. Anuj’s monthly earnings came to him as a cheque, but he had no bank account to deposit it. Two months passed, and those hard-earned cheques remained tucked away in a drawer, as he had no means to cash them.

Anuj’s ordeal with opening a bank account was rooted in the fact that his Aadhaar card bore the number of the care home’s founders. The founders’ negligence further exacerbated his problems, as they were reluctant to provide their documents or simply impossible to reach after he left the home. His struggle was not unique; it echoed the challenges faced by countless care leavers across India.

When these young souls venture out into the world, they often find themselves trapped in a web of incomplete or non-existent documentation. The very documents that serve as tickets to a plethora of rights and services become elusive for care leavers. And the consequences of this oversight can be dire.

For many, this isn’t just about opening a bank account or cashing a cheque. It’s about proving their identity, securing a place to live, accessing education, and obtaining employment. Basic documentation is the passport to a better future. Yet, care leavers find themselves on the fringes of society, battling bureaucracy, and navigating an arduous path just to access their rights.

The government, on one hand, talks about the importance of documentation for citizenship, but on the other, neglects the very individuals who face the most significant hurdles in obtaining these crucial documents. Care leavers, who have already faced adversity and are trying to carve out a path towards independence, should not be burdened with the weight of incomplete or non-existent documentation.

Anuj’s story is a stark reminder of the hurdles that care leavers face when they embark on their journey to adulthood. It’s a plea for change, a call to address the systemic issues that leave these young souls vulnerable. As a society, we must recognize the importance of enabling their transition into independent, empowered citizens. Basic documents should not be a luxury but a right, and it’s high time we bridge the gap that leaves care leavers struggling in the shadows of society.

Creating Opportunities: Empowering Care leavers Through Digital Learning

Hey guys, I’ve got some exciting news to share with you all! Have you heard about the first-ever Digital Marketing and Content Creation course at Dhruva Cafe?

So, let me take you back to the beginning. It all started when we got these cool desktops from Microsoft. We thought, “Hey, why not put it to good use?” And that’s how the idea of Dhruva Cafe was born. We wanted to create a space where care leavers from all backgrounds could come and learn something awesome in the digital world.

Now, let me tell you, it wasn’t a smooth ride from the get-go. When we started brainstorming ideas on how to make Dhruva Cafe a comfortable and welcoming place for care leavers, we faced some challenges. Some of the care leavers weren’t too keen on the timings, convenience fees, and the whole idea in general. But you know what? We didn’t let that discourage us. We were determined to create a cafe where care leavers could learn without feeling held back just because they didn’t have their own computers.

One of the biggest hurdles we faced was gaining the trust of the care leavers and convincing them to join our course. But we managed to get a computer room from MNIT Innovation and Incubation Center to run our program. And let me tell you, that one computer room became a vibrant and lively space. We adorned it with motivational quotes, cozy chairs and tables, a little library, and of course, some snacks to keep everyone fueled up.

Oh, and guess who had the honor of inaugurating our cafe? Ms. Rashmi Handa, the operations lead at Microsoft! Having her with us was truly a special moment.

Now that we had the computers and the space, the next step was finding volunteers who could dedicate their time to teaching the digital marketing course. Thankfully, we found two amazing volunteers who, despite being busy with their own businesses, wanted to do something for underprivileged children. We had our first interaction with them over Zoom, and they didn’t think twice before volunteering to teach the course. Talk about dedication!

Finally, our first batch started with seven enthusiastic care leavers who were eager to learn digital marketing. The course lasted for a month and was led by Eshita Maám, a marketing and content creation expert, and Swati Maám, who specialized in graphic design . At first, the care leavers were a bit shy around them, but as time went on, they became more comfortable and started showing their passion for learning new things. In class, Eshita Maám and Swati Maám would even work on improving the care leavers’ personalities by encouraging them to choose a topic and speak about it. Initially, some were hesitant, but now they speak with confidence!

All in all, starting Dhruva Cafe has been an incredible journey. The success we’ve seen and the skills the care leavers have learned, like using Canva and other amazing software, have been simply mind-blowing. It’s amazing what can happen when you give care leavers the opportunity to explore and grow in the digital world. Dhruva Cafe is just the beginning, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds!

So, if you’re ever in the area, make sure to swing by Dhruva Cafe and see the magic for yourself. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed!

Design Thinking Workshop on Aftercare System in India

Hello Readers,

We are back with another blog which is about the event that took place last month. Design Thinking has emerged as a powerful framework for problem-solving, encouraging innovation and fostering empathy. On the 28th and 29th of July, a captivating two-day Design Thinking workshop took place in the beautiful city of Jaipur. This workshop brought together diverse stakeholders, including corporate leaders, to harness their intellect and insight. The event aimed to explore ground realities, engage with care leavers’ tales, and visit local NGOs.

The workshop which was facilitated by Dr. Ranjan Banerjee, Dean of BITS School of Management, Mumbai along with his wife Dr. Anindita Banerjee who herself has a passion for facilitating a design thinking to help create innovative solutions for social challenges.

I remember when we thought of organizing this workshop, my team and our mentors were not sure how to conduct a Design thinking workshop in such a short span of time and whether dignitaries from various parts of the country would be able to travel all the way to Jaipur. But fortunately, everything went much better than we expected. It was the combined efforts and dedication of the Special 26 team of care leavers and our mentors working round the clock to make sure no one felt out of place during these two days’ residential workshop. To warmly welcome the delegates coming for the workshop, a team of Special 26 care leavers went to pick them from the airport/railway station with beautiful pagdi and a colorful dupatta on their arrival and took them to their place of stay. We had corporate leaders, NGOs, interested citizens passionate about the issue, representatives of UNICEF, care leavers themselves getting together to answer the question ” How might we enable care leavers to be well integrated into society”.

The two day residential workshop took place in the MIIC campus with flowery welcome in the session with introductory part. It was amazing to see people from different walks of life coming together for this workshop and trying to find collective solutions to the challenges of care experienced youth.

The main purpose of organizing this workshop was to give first hand experience of the ground reality challenges/success care leavers deal with in their day to day life after they are made to move out after the age of 18 years (as per the government regulation). The team was divided into 4 groups where along with care leavers, a team of delegates visited Childcare Institutions, a home where 6-7 are living under one roof, a bakery started by a care leaver himself and an unfiltered story told by a care leaver himself.

The visit to Devki’s bakery was a highlight, seeing our friend, a care leaver, fulfilling his dream of becoming an entrepreneur after years of his hard work and being passionate enough to pursue it. The pastries he made were delicious and I am sure his journey has just begun & will go a long way.

Visiting an HIV+ child care home was an experience in itself. Interacting with the children there was so heartwarming, happy in their own world, talking about their daily routines. Unfortunately, almost all of them did not have any idea what they would do after turning 18 when it would be time to leave the child care institutions.

On the 28th July, the event was followed by a dinner at Chowki Dhani where all the participants enjoyed the touch of Rajasthan through delicious Rajasthani Thali, along with cultural dance and music. During the workshop my team learnt the art of questioning correctly and framing them appropriately. The tools suggested by Ranjan sir were excellent. This workshop gave us a different perspective of thinking of possible way outs for care leavers’ challenges

The experience was very overwhelming, and we got a great response from our audience as well. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated, bringing boundless enthusiasm and unwavering passion to the sessions. Their active engagement, not only during the event but also in the valuable discussions that followed, truly enriched the entire experience. We really enjoyed the workshop and got some great insights from the participants with their impactful presentations.

The purpose of organizing the workshop for strengthening the Aftercare System in India. “Aftercare” is the provision of providing care & support to children post 18 years of age when they have to leave their childcare homes. The two-day workshop, held in Jaipur, marked a significant step towards empowering youth for a brighter future.

Institutional Care: Impact On Children https://clicforum.org/blog/institutional-care-impact-on-children/ https://clicforum.org/blog/institutional-care-impact-on-children/#respond Wed, 07 Jun 2023 11:14:39 +0000 https://clicforum.org/blog/?p=1504 Read more]]>

Institutional Care: Impact on children

Life without a family is difficult to fathom for almost everyone who was raised in such a loving and caring environment. However, this is an unpleasant reality for millions of orphan children in India. Because of shortage of resources and the prevalence of poverty, this is a more common sight in rural and semi-urban areas.

Hello, my name is Natasha, and I spent my adolescent years in institutional care with 15 – 16 other girls whom I refer to as my sisters because this was the environment in which I was raised. With no biological parents, the institution of care in which I was raised became a place I could call home. I was lucky to grow up in a loving child care institution and environment where the emphasis was on receiving the greatest education and becoming self-sufficient. But that’s not a story of every child placed in institutional care.

Institutional care, such as orphanages or residential care facilities, can have significant hidden costs that affect children’s long-term well-being. While the institution may provide basic care and support to children who have experienced trauma, abuse, or abandonment, it also determines the effects on a child’s development and overall well-being.

One of the most significant hidden costs of an institutional care is the lack of individualized attention and care that children receive. In child care institutions , children do not have consistent caregivers, which negatively impact their emotional development and attachment styles. They lack the opportunity to form close relationships with adults and peers, leading to social and emotional difficulties later in life. Institutional care also leads to delays in cognitive and physical development. Children do not receive adequate nutrition, education, or healthcare, which can negatively impact their growth and development. They also experience high levels of stress and anxiety, which affects their ability to learn and thrive.

Furthermore, an institutional care leads to long-term difficulties in forming and maintaining relationships, finding employment, and achieving an independent living. Children who experience institutional care are more likely to experience homelessness, unemployment, and poverty in adulthood.

In conclusion, while an institutional care may provide a temporary solution to the immediate needs of children who have experienced trauma or abuse, it can have significant hidden costs that affect their long-term well-being. It is important to provide individualized, family-based care options, such as foster care or adoption, whenever possible, as these have been shown to have more positive outcomes for children. Additionally, it is crucial to prioritize investments in preventative services, such as family support and mental health services, to help prevent the need for institutional care in the first place.

Empowering Care leavers: Why Access to Mental Health Care is a Basic Human Right?

Careleavers Mental Health Crisis

Do you believe that work-related stress is the sole cause of poor mental health? Have you ever considered a child’s mental health when he is asked to leave his sole home after reaching the age of 18? Have you ever pondered what care leavers think when they are left to fend for themselves?

Almost 1 in every 6 Care leaver reported multiple symptoms of psychological disorder, with a female skew 38% did not seek any assistance for mental health concern. Care leavers, those who have aged out of child care institutions often face a wide range of challenges. Many of them have experienced trauma, including physical abuse, neglect, and emotional abuse. This trauma can lead to a sense of feeling lost and disconnected from others, which can have long-lasting effects on their mental health. Empowering care leavers means recognizing their basic human rights to access mental health care, which can help them heal from past trauma and move forward with their lives.

Access to mental health care is a basic human right for everyone, regardless of their background or life experiences. Care leavers are no exception. Many care leavers struggle with mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). These issues can make it difficult to form healthy relationships, find stable employment, and maintain a sense of stability in their lives. By providing care leavers with access to mental health care, we can help them heal from their past traumas and build a brighter future.

Trauma is a common experience among care leavers. Many have experienced physical abuse, neglect, and other forms of trauma that can have devastating effects on their mental health. It is essential that we recognize the impact of trauma on care leavers and provide them with the support they need to heal. Mental health care can provide care leavers with a safe and supportive environment where they can work through their trauma and develop healthy coping mechanisms

In conclusion, empowering care leavers means recognizing their basic human rights to access mental health care. Care leavers have experienced trauma and face unique challenges in their lives. By providing them with the support they need to heal and recover, we can help them build a brighter future and break the cycle of trauma. Let us work together to ensure that all care leavers have access to the mental health care they need to thrive.

In Crisis Mental Health

Enabling Financial Indepedence and Literacy

Today’s blog is more on the educational side.

While living in child care institutions, children are kept in a protective environment. They have nothing to worry about. However, it is not the same when they are left to live independently after the age of 18 years. Due to disengagement, relocation, and early school exit, care leavers miss out on both crucial financial socialization in the home and financial instruction in school. Due to the lack of the skills necessary to manage their finances, many care leavers spend money when they have it with no sense of saving it and end up in debt.

I remember when I first received my pay, I was more keen to spend it on things I could afford rather than saving it because at home it was never the topic of discussion at home, and I feel all my fellow team members had gone through the similar experience. We gradually realised the need of financial literacy, but not every care leaver is fortunate enough to acquire the same understanding. As a result, we decided to host an online Income Tax Return Filing session to educate care leavers on how to file an ITR with the assistance of our mentor. Care leavers who attended the session heard the term Income Tax Return Filing for the very first time. As the discussion progressed, they were amazed and surprised to learn about the benefits of ITR filing, as many of them present had been working for a long time. My team ensured that every care leaver present at the session filed an ITR and supported those who needed assistance. To ensure that this information reaches a wider audience, the team created a video that explains each step of submitting the ITR online.

Importance of filing Income Tax Retun

Overall, enabling financial independence and literacy for care leavers requires a holistic approach that addresses their unique needs and challenges. By providing education, access to financial products and services, mentoring and coaching, counselling and assistance, and employment opportunities, peer support and networking, and advocating for policies that support financial independence, we can help care leavers achieve their financial goals and build a brighter financial future.

“While applying for a visa recently I was asked to submit ITR filing of the last 3 years. Thanks to the session conducted that I was able to provide the information and understood the value of filing ITR.” – Care leaver

Importance of filing Income Tax Retun

Careleaving Stories: Transitioning to Independent Living

“For those who dare to dream, there is a whole world to win”- Dhirubhai Ambani

Hello Reader!

Today’s blog is personal and inspiring. Transitioning to independent living can be a daunting task for anyone, but it can be especially challenging for careleavers. Careleavers are individuals who have been in the care of the state, such as foster care or residential care, and are now transitioning into adulthood without the support of a family.

Every year, 114,000 children are compelled to leave their child care homes in India. There is no proper system in place to support the transition of children moving out of Childcare Institutions at the age of 18 years. In a matter of a few weeks, they are left to build their lives from scratch without education. Despite the difficulties they encountered, they are now settled and content in their lives.

Let’s hear their stories

Savita is 21 years old and has lived in a child care institution since the age of 5 years. After a lot of struggle in life, today she is living independently and working in a bookstore to meet her daily expenses.

Savita was reported as a lost child at the age of 5 years when a childcare Institution took her in. By the time she attained the age of 18 years, she had to change 3-4 child care institution. After completing 18 years, she moved to a Women’s Shelter where women could complete their bachelor’s degree and get vocational training. They arranged marriages for the girls who could not complete their studies and were not ready to move out. So, they found a suitable match for her and got her married against her wish. The marriage was a torture for her where she was beaten regularly and sexually harassed by her husband.

During her visit to the shelter home, a friend gave her CLiC’s Helpline number. She felt comfortable talking to the team as all were careleavers so it became easy for her to share her problems. Anisha from CLiC got her immediate assistance through Aprajita Helpline for counseling & shelter support.

CLiC team found a PG for her and also got her placed at a Bookstore where she is earning Rs. 8,000 every month.

Partially blind, Sandeep had no interest in studies. After leaving child care institution, he got a job as a security guard where he was not happy. Today, he is working at a pharmaceutical company where he has completed two years and is doing very well.

Sandeep is from Sikar district of Rajasthan and lived with his paternal uncle after his parents death. He was partially blind and was teased by everyone in school about his eyes. Sandeep eventually lost interest in his studies. His uncle was unable to care for him, so he placed him in a child care institution in Jaipur.

Sandeep gradually began attending school but he felt embarrassed as he was older than all the children in his class. He left the school once again. After turning 18 years, he started looking for a job but due to lack of education and his disability, he got the job of a security guard at a shop.

CLiC came to know about Sandeep and provided him with mental support. We got him placed in Dawa Dost, a pharmaceutical company, where he earns 12,000 per month while improving his skills. Recently, he also received a 20,000 bonus for completing two years. He now inspires other Careleavers

After a troubled childhood and having no family, Radha found a home environment in her child care institution where she felt safe and happy. After turning 18 years, she had to struggle to complete her education due to lack of funds. Today, she is doing a hotel management course and living in a shared accommodation.

Radha was rescued by the Child Helpline at the age of 12 and she was sent to a child care institution. In her child care institution, she found a safe and secure environment which she welcomed with open arms. Radha quickly blended into the child care institution environment. She enjoyed dancing and used to participate in her school programs. She also enjoyed cooking and used to assist in the kitchen at her child care institution. At 18 years of age, she had no family to go to so her child care institution shifted her to their aftercare home.

CLiC met Radha during their visit to child care institution and discovered that she was still living in there under aftercare support. She was very interested in studying but due to a lack of funds the institution was unable to assist her. Seeing her interests, CLiC suggested that she join Hotel Management to develop her skills. Radha enrolled in a one-year Hotel Management course. She enjoys taking the course.

Sunil parents died due to HIV and he was diagnosed the same. After struggling to find a child care institution which took in HIV kids, he finally settled in a home. He became an electrician but was not happy. Today, he is pursuing hotel management & even doing an internship in a hotel.

After the death of his parents as a result of HIV/AIDS, Sunil and his older sister were diagnosed with the illness as well. At the time, there were no child care homes for HIV-positive children in Maharashtra so they were sent to a HIV home in Delhi through a child helpline. Sunil could not adjust well at the institution and began stealing staff items and selling them to his classmates. He disliked being isolated from the other children in home. He was then moved to a child care institutio in Jaipur. He began to slowly adjust here. He struggled in school, but developed an interest in repairing household items like televisions, refrigerators, and other machines. After the age of 18, he got a job at an electrician’s shop, but he wasn’t happy.

He had come to know about CLiC from child care institution and he also knew one of the CLiC team members from their time in the same Delhi home. It became easy for him to share his problems. We counselled him and discovered that he is concerned about his future and feels isolated. We reached out to his older sister, who lived in Delhi. She persuaded the child care institution staff member to allow Sunil to stay with her. During this time, we got to know him well and got to know that he had interest in doing hotel management. We got him enrolled in the program and after 3 months, he was even hired as an intern at a hotel.
